Dark Readings

The augur sat

in the middle

of the café,

naught but silence

surrounding her,

as she laid cards

in a circle

and five star points

and conjured up

fantastical

images, drawn

in the steam trails

of her coffee.

Look, there, fur and

fangs; look again,

a dragon's heart.

A third look shows

an orange faun,

tentacled, and

she clears the steam

away from that.

Not expected,

not welcome here.

More pleasant things,

flowers, lilies

of the valley.

The bell above

the door chimes once.

Another guest

sees the cards, smiles,

orders coffee,

sits opposite,

awaits wisdom.

She shuffles cards,

avoiding talk,

allowing light

of insight to

take hold of cards

and her dark thoughts.
